About jackrabbits mc

Club meetings are Monday nights (except Holidays and the day after our annual race) at our Bellflower clubhouse. The Jackrabbits Motorcycle Club began in 1947 in Bellflower. Original club members included Hazen Bair and Norm “Speed” Reeves of Norm Reeves Honda. Sometime in the 1950’s, Hazen Bair, who owned Triumph of Bellflower, offered to sell off a portion of his lot to the Jackrabbits so the club could build a clubhouse. This clubhouse is still in existence on Somerset (formerly Compton Blvd) and is the site of our weekly Monday night meetings. The Jackrabbits Clubhouse has seen plenty of action in its time. There was the Annual Halloween Costume Party, a couple of bachelor parties (allegedly!) and, as desert racing became more popular in the 60’s, it was Standing Room Only at the Monday night meetings. Our clubhouse was also used by other clubs, such as the Masterlinks, as well as a Pigeon Racing Club. Desert Racing was not the only racing the Jackrabbits did. There was TT Scrambles and Flat Track racing at Ascot Park with clubs such as the Hawthorne Gophers. Anyone who attended Speedway races at Costa Mesa Speedway saw Jackrabbits members working as flaggers. We also flagged races such as the Carlsbad GP’s and the US Grand Prix races at Glen Helen. The Jackrabbits have traditionally held the 1st Desert race of the year, which takes place on the 2nd Sunday in January out in Red Mountain. For several years, we also held a Desert Scramble out in Lucerne. Other club events include the Annual Family Field Meet and the Annual Pool Party, which replaced the Annual Beach Party. Our most popular event, however, is the Memorial Weekend Poker Run out at Cal City “Camp C”. During the 80’s and 90’s, the Poker Run was hugely popular with as many as 1000 participants. One year, a couple even got married at the infamous “Beer Check”. In the late 90’s, it was decided to temporarily “retire” the Poker Run due to the huge crowds (liability issues and all that) and hold a smaller version on an off weekend out at Slash X. About 5 years ago, we decided to bring back the Memorial Weekend Poker Run and combine it with our Annual Club Dinner and Awards Presentation. This has proved to be very popular with our members as well as visitors from other District 37 clubs who get to enjoy a catered dinner, slide shows and live bands on Saturday night and the Raffle and Trophy Presentation at the conclusion of the Poker Run on Sunday. Over the years, our membership has fluctuated but recently we’ve had an influx of new members and more and more Jackrabbit jerseys are seen on the starting lines. We’ve become more family-oriented and many of our members are 2nd and 3rd generation members. We’re proud of “Young Guns” Andrew Vandenberg, Steven Sileski, Brandon Cable and Kevin DeJongh for consistently finishing in the top of their classes and our more “mature” members are doing their part to add to our club points. We welcome anyone interested in joining a club to come out and visit us in the desert, guest pit with us at a race, or attend one of our Monday meetings.
